The Story Of Strangehollow
The idea that started Strangehollow was a challenge I gave myself which was to paint the inhabitants of a ‘vast enchanted forest’. This idea gave way to not just one book, but four!
This forest grew too, it now encompasses not only the Amazon-sized forest land, but huge mountain ranges in the north and wild coastlines to the west and south too.
I never imagined that there were so many creatures hiding away in my mind and I have loved every moment of creating this world.
Strangehollow is a wild and unforgiving place, humans do not live there, except for a small number of magical folk, the wizards, witches and enchanters who found a way to live among the dangerous beasts.
If you seek adventure and whimsy, magical beasts and strange characters, explore the world of Strangehollow.
I have a large collection now of squidgy, cheeky, fluffy and silly monsters. There are two books and now, this year there will be a third in the spring!
Mini Books Of Monsters
Cauldron
In 2018 I launched my second book, Cauldron. This book is filled with witches and their marvellous familiars, as well as magical potions and enchanted tools.
There are not many of these books left and once out of print, I will not be making more.
Alien Outlaws
I had had the idea of creating a collection of characters who were being chased across the universe for extremely silly reasons. The smuggling of illegal Zloppcumbers and teaching illegal dance moves are two of the crimes.
In 2024 this idea came to fruition with my book WANTED - Cosmic Outlaws, Space Pirates & Intergalactic Scallywags!
Lovers of Sci-fi and humorous aliens will love it.
Testimonials Of The Books
"My obsession with Emily's books just gets stronger with every new one published! No one else can suck me into their fantasy scapes so thoroughly. I love how nature is portrayed as ruthless and strong and also soft and cute at the same time. Not to mention all the amazing and adorable creatures - I love them so much! The amount of detail and whimsy in the soft but colourful art just captivates my mind in a sort of calm reverence - opening Emily's books is like taking a mini vacation for my neurospicy brain. I cannot wait to add to my slowly growing collection!”
- Rute Jacobi
“There's a strange spell that Emily Hare's work casts. Using a brush like a magician's wand, she summons onto the cavas fantastical beasts and vistas that have never been and that could never be, yet somehow feel like they once were, once upon a time.
There's a sense of fairy tale charm to her colors, compositions and creatures, but also a solidity and a weight... often with sharp, dangerous, teeth and merciless, twinkling eyes.
These fanciful dreams her work invites you to share often contain the tension (and thrill!) that the cute little creature you fell in love with at a glance might just bite. Hard.”
- Josh Dobbin
“The Strangehollow books are charming works of the imagination - filled with beautifully painted quirky critters and characterful creations.”
- Michael Thorp
“Sometimes, we try hard to make fantasy creatures real, too real until we end up with a monitor lizard or a bullfrog, (to all the herpetologists, I love lizards and amphibians, just ask Uncle Peter he lived with us for many years, (Iguana). Point is that when we imagine something it lives in that ephemeral dreamland of our minds. That’s where Emily’s books take you, a fantasy world of creatures and beings that inhabit a place you want to explore. Whimsical, dark, awe inspiring with a spark in their eyes that lights their soul and brings them to life.
Take a trip to Strangehollow and beyond, lose yourself and bring back stories of your adventures”
