Sculpting Pedro
A post from 3 years ago on my membership now recycled for the blog! I hope you enjoy! This was my first foray back into clay since school.
I have had this clay (Hobbycraft's own air dry, fiber/paper based I think - can’t get it anymore though) for literally years, i've been meaning to try it out for ages as I've not touched clay since I was about 18! I did pottery at school and we did some pots, but I preferred to do sculpting stuff. I was in love with Kevin Costner back then so I did a huge bust of his head hahah!! A friend of mine ended up taking it as I didn't want it, I wonder if she still has it?
It was SO fun making this chubby little guy. I've started painting him but not crazy about the way it looks yet, it's horrible using acrylic as it behaves SO differently from watercolour, and even MORE different painting a 3D object where I can't do wet in wet techniques, so it's a lot harder for me to achieve the soft blurred edges I like... it's a work in progress!
He started like this:
And the right hand image above here is not quite as squidgy as I fancied, so below is the day after I started adding more rolls LOL.
Here is Painted Pedro (not finished!)
The bottom is just indecent lol. I've got to lighten the colours a lot too, it's going to be my next task after finishing the last few shipments for the kickstarter.
Here’s finished Pedro:
I love this guy so much. I’ve been asked if I’ll sell him - nope, he’s all mine! It’s a nice marker of when I returned to sculpting too.
Addendum 2nd June 2026 - I am not sure if I will continue using air dry clay to sculpt, I might switch to polymer. I have a desire to make myself a monster chess set at some point, but that is going to be quite the challenge!
